Historical: Castle of Good Hope to look at the first building in SA, Cape Malay Quarters and Museum – slavery and the people who added to SA culture, District Six Museum – the forced removals under apartheid SA, Groot Constantia wine farm for a tour of the cellar and Cape Dutch manor house, Just Nuisance Museum, Naval Museum and Toy Museum in Simonstown, Robben Island – tour of the island and guided tour of the prison with a past inmate, township tour for a look at how many people cope with very little.

Day trip to Hermanus and the Cape Overberg

100km from Cape Town is Betty’s Bay. Visit Harold Porter Botanical Gardens for a short hike to a series of amazing waterfalls up Leopardskloof.

Whale watching in Hermanus (August – November only). Visit the whale museum as well.
Visit Eskom’s Palmiet Pump Power Station for an energy saving experience.

Day trip along the West Coast

Experience the San culture and way of life, this tour takes us to visit the Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre, situated some 70 kilometres from Cape Town.

The West Coast Fossil Park for a slide presentation and visit a dig. Learn to become a palaeontologist.
Postberg in the West Coast National Park (only during late July, August and early September) for viewing of Namaqualand flowers, zebra and antelope.

Julie Womack is a qualified South African primary school teacher with 29 years teaching experience. She has organised and led more than 15 school tours to Cape Town, the Garden Route and Kruger National Park. She is offering her services to help you with your Outdoor Education Programme by organising a trip for your class. She is also available to go with you on the tour and do the tour guiding and managing.

The All Africa Tours Cape Town tour for kids aims to:

• Let you see and experience the diversity of Cape Town.
• Learn what it was like in early Cape Town when it was just a colony.
• Look at the affects of Apartheid and the steps taken to move forward democratically.
• Identify suitable conflict management and problem solving strategies.
• Identify the role of Nelson Mandela and aim to copy it as part of ‘Lead SA’.
• Study the diverse fauna and flora of Cape Town, Overberg and our oceans.
• Partake in the baboon debate – should peninsula baboons be culled?

• Allow for reflection and personal development.
• Allow you to manage yourselves as ambassadors for your country.
• Complete worksheets for each day’s itinerary with the purpose of teaching and learning.
• For South Africans, this Outdoor Educational experience is linked to the SA curriculum.

Tour Journal

As part of the tour, each child will need a 20p flip file to store the ± 22 worksheets that cover every place visited. This is optional for independent SA schools and schools from other countries, but is essential for SA state schools to meet the requirements laid down by the EMDC.

Optional Assessments for South African schools

English assessments covering LO 3, 4 and 5, with rubrics and marking memos. Also available LO, SS (History) and NS (Life & Living and Energy) assessments covering the SA curriculum.

Costs

The cost will depend on the activities chosen, time of year and the number of children and adults, but will be under R4 000 / pupil. This cost includes all bookings, meals, accommodation, entrance fees, guiding fees, coach, driver’s costs, pro rata costs of the teachers and master copies of all the worksheets. The price excludes flight costs to Cape Town. Flights can be arranged on request. Recommendation : each child brings an additional R300 for curios and ‘munchies’ along the way.

Requirements

1. There must be at least one teacher / 18 pupils.
2. The teachers are responsible for their pupils on the bus, at the different places, restaurants and at night until the children are asleep.
3. The children must supply their own 20p flip file.
4. The worksheets need to be rolled off by the school at least 10 days before the trip as they include the final itinerary and a list informing the children what to bring on the tour. These will be emailed to you a month before the tour begins.
5. Every child’s parents will be required to fill in an indemnity form and an emergency form with contact details. This will be emailed to you a month in advance.
6. The school needs to supply a comprehensive First Aid kit to accompany the children on tour and to have obtained written permission from the parents for the teachers to administer non- prescriptive medicines. A list of recommended medicines is available.
7. If Julie is required to accompany the group, the teachers are to take full responsibility for the behaviour of the children especially at night.

Additional feature

We can video the tour and produce a 1 hour DVD for each child at an extra cost of R150 / pupil. The DVD will be available about a month after the tour. Free delivery for SA schools only.
