FamilyTake along those who mean the most to you, family and friends.Lets face it, Africa is no cheap holiday and this rules out many families from considering the possibility. On trying to see whether its possible, one is faced with expensive hotels and lodges on the one hand and the non-family oriented overland trip on the other.? Somewhere in between there is a way that allows you to take the whole family. Now, I can hear those of you saying that the kids will never remember anything of this in a few years time! Our kids can't remember the detail but they have great memories of time spent together and they have learned to appreciate diversity in culture as well as in flora, fauna and food, even eachother. Important to me is that they had time to be kids, away from their friends and the pressures to conform. When last did you see your eldest play with the little one or forget to back-chat and go fetch the water or peel the veggies?

NatureImmerse yourself in the creation.Nature - don't rush by on your way to the beach cottage, mountain resort, another new mall or the latest movie. Go some where and stop a while, breath it in. Enjoy how it tantalises your senses, lures you into searching the depths of the bush, entices you into wondering where that beautiful scent comes from or why the raptors are aloft so early today . Ever studied a dew covered spider's web as it shimmers in the morning sunlight? It may seem unthinkable but even your daughter
and her friends can become so enthralled that where they would normally
shiver at the thought of touching an insect or frog, they may end up
knee-deep in lake-side mud searching for specimens of whatever kind.

MissionsGo places and do something to help others.Want to go and visit those mad missionaries who gave it all up to disappear over the horizon. Well now is your opportunity to see what it is that they do . Most people who have left home and friends would welcome a visit from familiar faces. So, surprise them! Then again, maybe not! They are probably miles away, another country and you might end up alone on the dark doorstep, in parts unknown. Let them know you are coming, ask them what you can bring, what you could do to help, how you could spend the time just being there for them! You may not know them but a visit from home, from a familiar culture,
language and background is a breath of fresh air to those who live away from
home. Be a good steward, share your life with someone else for a moment.

AdventureExperience "big eyes" moments and remember for a lifetime. For those who want more than to be high-jacked on the way to work, come find true adventure around every corner. And I don't mean those crazy, dangerous part of Africa. There are many pleasant but out of the ordinary roads that will fill your story books and keep many entertained on your return home. Don't let life slip boringly by. Far from dangerous many places in Africa will thrill your heart and leave you breathless. Be it white water rafting the Nile, Gorilla trekking in Uganda, climbing Kili, snorkeling among the corals, watching the morning mist rise above the forest, or being enthralled as hundred and thousands of animals pass in front of you. Whether a 5 day safari or a 3 month expedition, it is
your choice. Don't let the opportunity go by!

WildlifeChange from the wild life to wildlife.Wildlife - and you thought this would be top of the list. Oh, it's a big draw-card but if it is top of your list or the only reason for going you will miss all the rest. Do you have the Big Five on your tick-list ad nothing else? Come see our list, that keeps the kids searching today, tomorrow and the next. Make it fun and keep the little ones busy with activities related to what they are seeing and they will stay out of your hair. They will probably ask everyone to keep their eyes open for another 'meerkat'. Spend
time at a waterhole, wait, listen and learn. Let the animals teach you how to
survive in the "jungle", how to adapt and enjoy a slower pace of
life, but ready to burst into the dash for survival.

Budget - Having a family with five children, we started camping as a way to stretch the budget while getting away from it all! However, somewhere along the way, a night or two in a chalet, bungalow or banda, whatever you choose to call it make for a fantastic break. Over time we have built up our stock of camping equipment, which turns a dirty, dusty affair into a fantastic outdoors experience. We have learned what can be left at home and what we think is a necessity. We also know by now where to find good value and places we are prepared to recommend or go back to ourselves. |
Sociable - For us a good holiday is one shared with family and friends. There is nothing quite like sharing good times and being able to take out the photographs or video, reminiscing about the good moments and experiences, months, even years down the track. While travelling you are going to meet many people and make new acquaintances, from near and far. Some want to be left alone, others will babble over with suggestions about what to see and where to go, or where not to. Nobody knows better, as to where to go and what to see, than the locals. Listen to them, share life with them and come away leaving a little of your heart in some remembered place! |

Outdoors - The outdoors is freedom and space. An opportunity to focus on something more then a ruler-length from your nose. Get away from your diary, desk and computer. Forget those deadlines, those constant meetings, the boss, the traffic. Enjoy the caress of the breeze or the warm sun on your face, the fragrance of herbs and blossoms, the sound of a dancing stream. Stand still, long enough to hear the birds, the rustle of leaves in the trees and notice the way horizon meets the sky. |
Good food - No take-aways, no microwave, but who needs those when you have time on your hands and a great outdoors recipe in mind. A sundowner, great conversation, good coals and a few utensils, including the necessary caste-iron African pot, come together in a scrumptious meal, watched and waited for by all. A few basics ingredients, herbs and spices brought along can be supplemented by good quality local meat and fresh veg + dairy perishables. Nothing that a good coolbox and safari deepfreeze can't handle, including chilled drinks and ice. |
